Most people have one job

Nigel Farage has a rather more complicated payslip.

The £2 million figure does not include Farage’s MP salary. The Guardian, using analysis of the Register of Members’ Financial Interests, reported in May 2026 that his income and registered financial interests since becoming MP had passed £2 million on top of his parliamentary salary.

Then in July, during a House of Commons debate on banning MPs’ second jobs, MPs repeatedly referred to Farage as having 16 jobs.

None of that is automatically unlawful. MPs are currently permitted to earn outside income within parliamentary rules, subject to restrictions and declarations.

Who pays Nigel Farage?

The current Parliamentary Register gives a flavour of how wide the answer is.

That is the current rolling register, which only keeps ended interests for a limited period. It is not identical to the wider historic list used when MPs referred to 16 jobs in the Commons.

And paid employment is still not the whole diary. Farage is also the unpaid leader and director of Reform UK, owns interests in media companies, is co-founder and chairman of Action on World Health, and has registered shares connected to Stack BTC.

£22,500 an hour

This is where the numbers become difficult to comprehend.

Farage is a brand ambassador for Direct Bullion, a company selling physical gold and other precious metals.

The Guardian reported that Farage had received £685,500 from Direct Bullion, including a May 2026 payment of £270,000 for 12 hours of promotional work.

That is not Farage’s salary for every hour he works. It is the effective rate of that particular declared payment.

It is still extraordinary. At that rate, one hour is more than many people earn over many months of work.

The Parliamentary Register also records an earlier Direct Bullion payment of £189,300. The company’s payments have become one of Farage’s most lucrative outside interests.

GB News: another substantial income stream

Farage has continued presenting for GB News while serving as MP.

The current Register records GB News remuneration of £97,928.40 paid monthly with 32 hours a month declared. More recent individual declarations reported by the Guardian included £40,662 for 12 hours in March 2026 and £18,402 for six hours in June.

In the Commons debate on MPs’ second jobs, MPs referred to Farage receiving around £400,000 for presenting shows on GB News.

Again, the point is not that an MP is forbidden from presenting television. The issue is time.

And then there is the £5 million

This money is different. It was not declared as salary or payment for work.

Christopher Harborne gave Farage £5 million personally in April 2024, before Farage returned to frontline parliamentary politics. Farage and Harborne have described it as an unconditional personal gift. Farage has variously discussed security and a reward for his Brexit campaigning.

The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards has investigated questions around the gift and Farage’s declarations. The existence of an investigation is not a finding that he broke the rules.

But in July 2026 the Guardian reported that senior Reform figures said Farage had told them in March 2024 that he would need about “a million a year” to cover lost earnings if he stood for Parliament.

Five years at £1 million a year happens to equal £5 million.

What about working full-time as an MP?

Farage is paid a public salary of £98,599 a year to be the MP for Clacton.

An MP’s work is not simply turning up for votes in Westminster. Constituents expect casework, correspondence, meetings, local advocacy, parliamentary questions and some form of personal accessibility.

Farage has said he does not hold traditional open surgeries because of security advice. That concern should not be dismissed: violence and threats against MPs are real.

But in Clacton, residents have also told reporters they did not know how to contact him, did not know where his office was, or felt he was rarely present. Former Clacton MP Giles Watling said some constituents felt “slightly abandoned”.

The Guardian reported in 2026 that figures from the previous year showed Farage spending about 22 hours a week on additional employment aside from being an MP. During the Commons debate on second jobs, MPs cited analysis suggesting that by March 2026 his outside work amounted to the equivalent of around 140 working days.

And the European Parliament pension?

Farage spent more than 20 years as an MEP.

In 2017 he publicly confirmed that he intended to accept the European Parliament pension to which he was entitled. Contemporary reports estimated it could be worth around £73,000 a year under the rules then expected to apply.

Since then, the European Parliament has changed parts of its supplementary pension arrangements, including cuts affecting former MEPs. We have not found a current official source confirming the precise amount Farage personally receives today.

So the responsible claim is not that he definitely receives £73,000 a year today. It is that he has publicly said he would take his MEP pension and was reported to have a substantial entitlement.

Can a wealthy man represent Clacton?

Of course he can.

Being rich does not make somebody incapable of representing people who are poorer than them. Parliament has always contained wealthy MPs.

But Clacton contains communities facing low wages, deprivation, stretched public services and cost-of-living pressure.

That makes contact important.

Farage is entitled to lead Reform UK. He is entitled to appear on television. He is entitled to write articles, promote gold, give speeches and take other permitted work.

Clacton is equally entitled to ask what it receives for the salary it pays its MP.
